Buying guide
Buying used commercial equipment safely
Used commercial equipment can offer excellent value, but the purchase should be based on evidence rather than assumptions. These checks help a business decide what it still needs to verify before agreeing a deal.
Confirm exactly what is included
Model numbers, accessories, software licences, tooling and manuals can materially change the value of an item. Ask the seller to list everything included in the sale and record any exclusions in writing.
Review condition and service history
- Request recent, clear photographs from several angles.
- Ask about faults, repairs, hours of use and the reason for sale.
- Review maintenance, inspection or calibration records where relevant.
- Arrange an independent inspection when the value or risk justifies it.
Check ownership and authority to sell
The seller should be able to show that the business owns the equipment or has authority from the owner to sell it. Finance, lease or hire-purchase arrangements may affect whether title can be transferred.
Plan collection before agreeing the deal
Confirm dimensions, weight, loading access, disconnection requirements and who is responsible for lifting equipment. A low purchase price can become expensive if collection has not been planned properly.
